In the Steps of Jane Austen by Anne-Marie Edwards

Travel was an integral part of life for Georgians of Jane Austen’s social class; the characters in her novels are continually visiting both friends in the neighbourhood and acquaintances and relatives across the country, and her letters and life show that Jane Austen herself did too.

She often stayed with friends and family in her youth, and travelled from home to home after her father’s death, staying with her brothers in Southampton and Kent before finally settling again in her beloved native rural Hampshire. And wherever she was settled, she would frequently explore the area on foot and walk to the homes of her friends nearby.

Edwards' conveniently pocket-sized book of ‘Walking Tours of Austen’s England’ sets out walking routes for every important place in Jane Austen’s life, and includes many references to places mentioned in the novels.

Each section provides a map and detailed directions at the end of a chapter describing the relevance of the place in Jane Austen’s life and work. Photographs of key sights on the walk illustrate the texts.

Thorough, detailed and lively, this book will make a delightful guide to any Austen-inspired ramble.
