Jane Austen Fashion by Penelope Byrde

No one could be better equipped to help a reader picture what the characters of Jane Austen’s novels were wearing than the curator of the Museum of Costume and Fashion Research in Bath.

Having gone through various editions since the 1970s, the book draws closely on the Museum’s collection as it sets out the development of fashion during Jane Austen’s lifetime with the aid of photos of items in the Museum’s collection and fashion plates of the day.

It both sets out the broader historical framework, and shows more specifically with reference to Jane Austen’s correspondence and her novels how she and her characters would have dressed for every occasion.
