Jane Austen born in Steventon on 16 December.

Jane Austen’s brother George is sent away from Steventon to be cared for by the Culham family in Monk Sherborne. The Culhams also looked after Jane Austen’s uncle, Thomas Leigh

Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra move to Oxford to attend boarding school. The school was later moved to Southampton, where the girls caught typhus and had to return home. Around this time, Jane Austen’s brother Edward was officially adopted by Thomas and Catherine Knight, wealthy relatives of George Austen

Jane Austen and her sister leave for school in Reading, but are brought home the following year as their father could not afford to keep them at school

Jane Austen begins to write her Juvenilia

Jane Austen begins to write Lady Susan, completed in 1795

Jane Austen reads Elinor and Marianne to her family – the novel would later be reworked to become Sense and Sensibility

Jane Austen drafts First Impressions, later to become Pride and Prejudice
