Jane Austen moves to Bath with her parents and her sister Cassandra.

Jane Austen receives a marriage proposal from Harris Bigg-Wither which she initially accepted and then rejected.

1803
 

Jane Austen’s manuscript Susan (later reworked to become Northanger Abbey) is sold to Crosby & Co. Jane Austen visits Lyme Regis three times between 1803 and 1804 with her brother Henry and his wife

Jane Austen begins, but does not finish, The Watsons

1805
 

The Reverend George Austen, Jane Austen’s father, dies in Bath, leaving his wife and daughters with little money

1806
 

Jane Austen, her mother and her sister go to stay with Edward Austen-Knight at his estate in Kent. Edward was later able to offer them a home on his estate at Chawton in Hampshire

Jane Austen falls ill

A second edition of Mansfield Park is published

Jane Austen begins and abandons her unfinished novel Sanditon
Jane Austen dies in Winchester on 18 July, aged 41.
She is buried in Winchester Cathedral
Persuasion and Northanger Abbey published posthumously
