Showing a landscape bathed in sunshine, 'The Pleasure Gardens' is inspired by Sydney Gardens, a hub of social life and amusement in Bath.
Visiting relatives in the town at the end of the 1790s, long before the pressures of permanent residence in the town in straightened circumstances came to bear on the Austen ladies, the youthful Jane savoured the pleasures of the town.
Popular events in the Gardens, such as its public breakfasts and firework displays, offered much to engage Jane’s lively mind and imagination, from new acquaintances to elaborate entertainments.
