Ardour at the manor
It is 1796, and Tom Lefroy, recent graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, is staying with his aunt at Ashe House. Near neighbours, close family friends and avid walkers, the Austen sisters are frequent visitors, walking over from their father’s parish at Steventon. 21-year-old Jane, witty, vivacious and an enthusiastic dancer, couldn't but catch Tom's eye, and 'Ardour at the manor' captures his feelings after one of her visits.

The Pleasure Gardens

Showing a landscape bathed in sunshine, 'The Pleasure Gardens' is inspired by Sydney Gardens, a hub of social life and amusement in Bath.

Visiting relatives in the town at the end of the 1790s, long before the pressures of permanent residence in the town in straightened circumstances came to bear on the Austen ladies, the youthful Jane savoured the pleasures of the town.

Popular events in the Gardens, such as its public breakfasts and firework displays, offered much to engage Jane’s lively mind and imagination, from new acquaintances to elaborate entertainments.

Time to write

'Time to write' conveys the tranquillity of life at Chawton Cottage on her brother’s estate, which Jane, returned to her beloved Hampshire countryside after several restless moves between homes, found perfect for writing.

With her family around her offering sufficient social intercourse to stimulate her wit, but with a quiet space to retreat to at the Cottage, she entered the most productive period in her life. At a small writing table in the sunny front room, with a view of the picturesque village street, she revised her best novel drafts for publication, and completed the works still so much loved today.
